Hope Emerson (1897 – 1960) was an American actress, vaudevillian, nightclub performer, and strongwoman. An imposing person physically, she weighed around 210 pounds and stood 6 feet 2 inches tall in her prime. She appeared in a number of films and television shows, often playing tough, no-nonsense characters. Emerson was known for her imposing height and distinctive voice, which helped her to stand out in a crowded field. Some of her most notable roles included the prison matron in the film "Caged" and the nurse in the television series "Peter Gunn". She was also an accomplished athlete, competing in track and field events and playing professional basketball. Emerson passed away in 1960 at the age of 62.
